Dueling Rogues
--------------------
This guide has stuff you should already know. But you wouldnt be here if you didn't need help. ^_^

Requirements for this to work.
Talents
- Soul link (of course)
- Master Summoner
- Master Demonologist
- 5/5 Fel Concentration
- Siphon Life
You will obviously be the infamous SL/SL spec. or some variation of it.

Start off by buffing up, summoning voidwalker, and soul linking with pet. Conjure healthstone; some consider this unfair so check with who your dueling and let them know if consumables can be used. Expect to see the rogue vanish, sap, then bandage if consumables are allowed.

Beginning of duel:
Move to a position that forces the rogue to take an obvious route to reach you. This means climbing a hill and start channeling rain of fire. It's a rare case this will work and very situational, but to your advantage.
The more likely scenario is you're Cheap Shotted right from the get go. This could be 4 seconds of free damage for the rogue if you dont trinket. Quickly trinket out and send pet on rogue. Rogue will deadly throw, kick, shadowstep, or jus straight sprint at you. Try your best to get all your dots up.
If the rogue is dumb enough to attack your pet you can start casting fear. Otherwise put all your instant cast spells up and force the rogue to use Cloak of shadows. This will remove all DOTS and raise resistance to spells for 5 seconds. You want the rogue to blow this cooldown as soon as possible else your pretty much screwed. So just keep draining while the dots eat away at the rogue.

Surviving
During that 5 seconds the rogue is going to be putting out a lot of dmg while you're forced to just eat it. To minimize this damage have your voidwalker cast Sacrifice the moment the rogue cloaks. (NOT DEMONIC SACRIFICE, theres a difference) Then cast Fel domination, summon voidwalker and soullink once again. (IMPORTANT: make sure to reapply soul link or else it was pointless to resummon)
It'll be difficult to apply the dots but get them all up and start draining again. If you panic and sacrifice the second voidwalker too early you are not taking advantage of soul link.

Note: If you have arena gloves with the 50% chance to avoid interuption while casting fear & the 4 piece set bonus which reduces casting time of fear you may try fearing instead of draining at the beginning in order to force Cloak of Shadows earlier.

Disclaimer
This guide is used to illustrate a duel, not anything else. Following the strategy alone will not guarantee victory but gives an idea of what to expect and how it can be dealt with. If you're still losing, it may be a talent tree issue or gear issue.

GOODLUCK!

  1. Confidant Says:

If youre SL/SL just use succi at the beginning of the fight and kite, otherwise 6/44/11 or any variation should beat any rogue everytime. BTW Mutilate rogues, just put your back to a wall and they can only sin strike

  2. Breaky Says:

Great strategy, but perhaps throw in what if the Rogue trinkets, or when to use your death coil perhaps.

  3. MrNO Says:

What is this ? is it guide ? is it a joke ? totally useless . sorry

  4. Abdoom Says:

I clicked the link post on the front page expecting to see a decent strat.

If it was just basic stuff everyone knew then I wouldn't mind, but this "guide" is horrid and has some of the stupidest ideas I've seen.

    Trinket cheapshot? Wow, just wow.

The fact that your writers actually thought this was good is a whole nother can -o- worms.

  5. spoht Says:

does the author have a lvl70 warlock? this guide really leaves me in doubt

  6. Drazzilb Says:

In response to the trinketing cheapshot; yes it isn't necessary. In fact it's possible to win without bringing the pvp trinket altogether. It's a fight that involves outlasting the opponent.. my advice is get your damage started early, you'll be eating that gouge and kick, at least be doing damage when it happens.

I realize this is the internet where nonconstructive criticism makes you feel better about yourselves. But to those of you who actually have other strategies, I'd love to hear them.

  7. Ragadorn Says:

Though I'll be more articulate than some of the previous posts, I play a rogue and your strategy is pretty horrible.

First of all, if you trinket out of cheapshot I'm just going to use kidney shot immediately and you'll now have to soak up a 6 second stun (I'm subtlety so when I open it's usually with 3 combo points from CS and 2 combo points from premeditation). After that, you've now handed me a free blind at some point in the match, which I'll definitely use if you sacrifice your pet, leaving me free to bandage.

Second of all, you're not going to be able to force a rogue to Cloak of Shadows by trying to out-DPS him at melee range. Simply put, if the two of you are standing toe-to-toe (you with instants, him with melee), the rogue is going to destroy you even with SL/SL + Voidwalker. The strength of warlocks is DPSing at a distance; their weakness is trying to get anything useful done with someone (like a rogue) on them. Making a strategy based around a warlock's weakness is a sure way to lose.

Thirdly, standing there and draining the rogue is just asking to be kicked and have all of your shadow spells get knocked out for five out of every ten seconds.

Lastly, you're never going to get off a fear standing next to any decent rogue--you're best bet is going for a deathcoil + fear, which any decent rogue is also going to trinket out of, but should at least buy you some temporary breathing room

  8. Abdoom Says:

You can enter this fight without a trinket?

Did you just mention outlasting yet say that one of your main defensive tools is not important? Or did you mean outlast a non mana user's class.

Heck, the best strat would be to not follow your advice. For example Sac'ing a VW when the rogue pops cloak.

"Please follow your cloak with a vanish and leave me standing like an idiot."

or he could just blind bandage or blind > sap bandage since you have no pet to threaten that.

Sac'ing when he pops Ad rush or throws a 5 point kidney shot would be a decent example of common sense.

PS. Do you really have a lv70 warlock or was this just theorycraft?

  9. Ziss Says:

Take it easy, I mentioned this strategy because I really liked the formating of the entry and the depth of explaining every second of the fight.

Feel free to submit your own strategies under the appropriate category if you believe the fight should take a different approach.

  10. Jedah Says:

You will not beat a decent rogue with this strategy unless you severely out-gear them.

    Signed,
    A Rogue

  11. Snitch Says:

True, Ziss, but trinketing a CS.. really ;)

  12. Anon Says:

    Thanks for the guide.

    I recommend:
    1) Don't trinket CS, wait for KS.
    2) Immediately after trinket, deathcoil/fear/coex/dots/stick puppy on him so he can't restealth.
    4) Kite from there.
    3) If the rogue is shadowstep, you're screwed. If he's shadowstep and undead, you are totally boned.

    Signed

    A Rogue.

  13. A warlock Says:

Save your void sac until you are close to dying...those few seconds you take to summon a new one after he has beaten through the shield he will rip through you without SL and the master demo buff. If you can, sneak in a siphon life between his CS and KS in order to prevent restealthing (he probably wont burn cloak over it). Trinket KS and immediately coex. If he doesnt hit you with a lucky mace stun or crippling poison you will get away for a few seconds. This will force him to burn cloak or sprint. If he sprints reapply coex if he doesnt and he cloaks he will get back on you. Wait until you have an opening and death coil/fear. A good rogue wont trinket dc but wait for fear. He will then get back on you and turn you into hamburger. Good game. Go ahead and try to drain life or fear and get kicked or gouged. Or he could let you cast fear and promptly vanish it. Or blind. Any way you cut it, it's a duel that you weren't meant to win.

    hi

  16. asdf Says:

stopped reading after I saw "Trinket the CS"

and locks wonder why they get beaten by rogues...you are just bad.

  17. Nesnomis Says:

    lololololololol go destru and l2p

  18. Warlox Says:

Trinket the CS? Then he's just going to kidney shot you and you can eat that damage. A smart Rogue does this:

Sap Warlock open on pet, kill pet during sap Blind Warlock if he trinkets sap. Rogue will hop on Lock who will use Fel Dom but will likely have to wait until after KS to get it out because a smart Rogue will just KS you as soon as you Fel Dom. All this time you're eating massive damage with no SL and when you get the VW out you're already hurting and likely around 40% or less. If Lock trinkets KS Rogue will lay on DPS until he soul links the VW then he'll CloS (assuming the warlock had dots on him) Vanish > CS > KS again and the Lock will likely be dead by this point and if not he can easily be blinded so the Rogue can run off, re-stealth, then open again.

This strategy is terrible. If you ever trinket Cheap Shot against a 2k rated Rogue he will eat you alive. He's going to anyways but he's going to laugh while destroying you if you trinket CS there's just no point to that.

  19. ßeta Says:

that was the stupidest strat i have ever read.
