Mods and PvP: oTweaks
October 5th, 2007 by Magog ·
I will be periodically highlighting useful addons/tweaks — and as with all material here on this site, it will be specifically oriented to PvP/arenas. Very briefly on addons and PvP: although I don’t mind loading up my UI with addons for PvE, it’s a different matter for PvP. While there are many addons that give very useful information, they can be very harmful in PvP if they take your eyes and brain off the action going on in front of you.
Instead of thinking of addons as something that pops up on your screen to tell you what to do, think of them as tweaks to your UI that can help improve your PvP experience… much like adjusting settings on gaming keyboards or mice.
With that short caveat out of the way, the first addon I’m featuring is oTweaks…oTweaks

This tiny “addon” is actually just a front end for a few very useful CVar tweaks. If you’ve already heard of it before, that’s because it’s not new. Although it hasn’t been updated in quite awhile, it still works and, aside from manually editing the variables, there isn’t another addon I’ve found that will replace all of it’s functionality in the same, small package.
Let’s take a look at the settings.
(Screenshots below are via the configuration panel in that comes with the Rock library. Addons like Fubar and Pitbull will already have it installed. If you do not use those addons, you can use /otweaks to command line configure.)
Camera
This setting allows you to adjust the values of the max camera distance and zoom speed. The max zoom setting will allow you to set your maximum distance further than the slider on the Interface panel — good for a quick overview of the battle.
Max setting on the interface panel is 30 yards, with oTweaks you can increase it to 50. Here is an example of the setting at max.

Combat Log
Here you can adjust the range of your combat log. Why is this important? If you use any addons that parse the combat log (SCT, NECB, SpellAlert, etc.), they will only be able to pick up the events that show up on the combat log.
While the default combat log range of 50 yards is sufficient for most purposes in the arena, I like the extended range so I can catch events for enemies who are standing (or hiding) a little further away. I recommend setting it to the maximum 200 yards. Because of the set amount of players in the arena, there is no impact to performance.

Targeting
These settings allow you to fine tune your tab targeting. First off here is the config panel:

Before I get into the tweaks let me explain a little on how tab targeting works. When you hit the tab button to target closest enemy, the system will first check 2 zones — (1) a cone spreading out from the center of your character and (2) a circle 10-15 yards around your character — then it will target the first enemy in those zones starting from around 10 o’clock and sweeping from left-to-right (clockwise).
You can not adjust the circle around your character (red circle in diagram), but you can adjust the size and shape of the cone. That’s where oTweaks comes in.
The distance (yellow “D” on diagram) can be adjusted from 1-50 (presumably yards). The default is somewhere around 40, so it’s a good idea to max this value out, especially if you are a ranged class.
The radius (blue “R” on diagram) of the cone is actually a misnomer: you are really adjusting the degree of the arc. Again the values are from 1-50. They are not actual degrees, so it’s best to play with them until you get the setting you prefer. A smaller radius value will give you a tighter, more precise cone — and naturally a larger value, a wider, more sweeping cone. At max setting, you will target enemies behind you at distance. It’s all personal preference here, the important thing is that the control is there if you want it.

Very cool. Will pick it up.
And we all know about Gladiator-esque arena targeting mods… those have been covered to death elsewhere, so I’d love it if you focused on those very cool but less used mods like otweaks!

Let me speak on behalf of all serious WoW pvpers when I say that this blog is like a dream come true. Ziss, this is everything that people want and need to hone their pvp skills. Keep up the great work!
Ziss: Your compliments are flattering, but you should save them for now. This is only the tip of an iceberg and you guys have no idea how much more we have planned.

God, if only there was a way to make tab targeting ignore all non players… ie: pets.
One of my frustrations has always been the tab targeting picking up players half a map away when someone is beating on you right in your face. I wonder if setting this very short would help solve this… then again it could really screw you when you tab to blind.
What do you guys set yours to?

Zure: I’ll do my best to cover things that haven’t been featured already on other sites.
Reinhold: On the pets, I looked around a good while and couldn’t find anything to skip over pet targeting. Either Blizzard wants to keep it that way, or someone is hiding a really useful mod.
As for picking up targets farther away first, here is a macro I found that might help:
/script SetCVar(”TargetNearestDistance”, 10)
/targetenemy [harm,nodead]
/script SetCVar(”TargetNearestDistance”, 41)
It’s just a target command bracketed by a couple of distance settings. Set the two values to whatever works best for you.

How on earth did you find this addon!!one!
I take pride in knowing and have used almost all Ace addons, but this little jewel never apeared in my radar. There is no link in the official page nor in the server where is hosted. Crap, if i didnt know this is the official mirror for wowace files i would think this is a ultra advanced non-compiled keylogger.
Magog: Yeah, I was surprised to find it still tucked away on files.wowace.com. Haste moved development of all of his oAddons off of the Ace site awhile ago and his new home for his addons, fuxsake.net, is currently down.

I, too, possess a pit-bull who may be the most caring animal I have ever owned. Quickly, a fresh dog breed will come together for your media to blast, because they have performed rotties and dobies in preceding years. Unfortunate that media sensationalism breeds a lot inaccurate details.
