Blizzard’s New (Arena) Math
September 25th, 2007 by Magog ·
Does this mean anything to you?

No? Good. Me either. This, my friends, is the new arena points formula that Blizzard unveiled with the patch. Not sure what was wrong with the old formula, but I’m gonna go ahead and trust Blizzard on this one — I get enough of a workout playing Brain Age 2 on my DS.
Thankfully, the 2v2 and 3v3 adjustments are a little less cryptic. Here are the new percentages:
2v2 teams earn 76% of the points of a 5v5 team with the same rating
3v3 teams earn 88% of the points of a 5v5 team with the same rating
Oh, and if you are looking for a points calcuator with all the new numbers, take a look at the Armory’s new Arena Calculator page. In addition to the standard points calculator, they’ve also added some nifty toys. Check it out:

From my understanding…the 2’s and 3’s bracket were not giving enough points compared to the 5vs5 bracket. A lot of people dont have epiced out MS warriors and geared out holy pallys to play their 5vs5 so they would grab 1 or 2 friends and play a 2 or 3man arena weekly.
What this means is that the people in larger guilds were gettting rougly 800 more arena points per month which is huge and not really fair if you assume that arena was meant for casual players that didnt raid. The casuals were still getting screwed and the raiders were seeing bigger rewards.
2vs2 were normally finishing in the 1400-1500 giving them 200-250ish pts
3vs3 in the same rating were getting 300+ arena pts
5vs5s with the same equaly geared people were finishing with 1600 hundred rankings and getting 500 pts per week. It’s much easier to get a high er ranking in the 5vs5 because there are less teams so that was also an unfair advantage.
With the new system you aren’t penalized as much for not running 5vs5’s
So basically the 5vs5′ers were getting 200 pts more per week than the 3vs3 and 250+pts more a week than 2vs2’s meaning they are getting 800-1000 more arena pts per month.
Magog: /agree. Bumping up the points for 2v2 and 3v3 is a good adjustment by Blizzard.

I was bored a work this morning and figured I would do some graphing to compare the new and old formulas. So while downloading Java to get a graphing applet working, I found that someone over on the EJ forums decided to save me some time today:

So it looks like pre-1500, you will lose a little more points as your rating gets lower. Then from 1500-1900 the curve stays relatively the same. And after 1900, the curve fattens out a bit. Interestingly, 1900 is the number thrown about when they are talking about the possible arena purchasing cutoffs.
Like the post says, the graphs are for the 5v5 values, so the 2v2 and 3v3 graphs will see a slightly larger gap between the pre- and post-patch graphs.
Here is the old formula for anyone who is interested:
If rating is less than or equals to 1500 then
Points=0.38*rating-194
(note: this calculation can go negative, but will be floored at 0)
If rating greater than 1500 then
Points=1426.79/(1+918.836*Power(2.71828, -0.00386405*rating))
